Festival Theatre - Historic Treasure

Festival Theatre On my first visit to Adelaide on an Aussie Pass bus tour around the highways and byways of Australia I wandered along North Terrace and found my way to the Festival Theatre. I never plan my journeys, they just happen. There was a craft fair on around the exterior (1981) in summer. I subsequently did a tour of the interior, getting a big glossy brochure in the process. I wish I had kept this brochure! The centre captivated me then, not knowing I would one day live here in Adelaide. Since that day I have returned many, many times. Performances, Something on Saturday with the little people, art shows and prizes, theatre and Peter Combe. They all sit in my memory bank. Happily I have passed this love onto my children, who regularly attend the State Theatre productions and other shows. The Festival Centre is acoustically the best venue I have ever been in. Have loved its many levels, drinks bars, art installations and occasionally the food. I must lament the state of the Plaza area which has been left to decay – hope this nomination makes the cut, if nothing else to press for a makeover or at least a paint job for this plaza and its geometric squares and chimney. The Festival Centre is indeed out historic treasure and an asset to future generations.
